I can not believe that Evander is already 5 months old and Gemma is 19 months! It has been a whirlwind getting used to being not only a family of four but a mother to two under two. (That’s a mouthful!) I decided to give everyone a quick update and list out my favorite baby essentials for these ages!

Baby and Toddler Night Time Routine

Let’s be real, as parents, there are many days when we are counting down till bed time. A smooth running night time routine is crucial in the Smith Household. With two under two we ALL need bed time to run like a well-oiled machine. Rested babies and rested parents are SO important. Below, I am going to go through our daily night time routine in hopes that you might find something that helps with your own child’s bedtime.

What I Am Teaching My One Year Old

As a former teacher, education is so, SO important to me! I cannot WAIT to really do “school time” with Gemma. Because she is only one year old we do not have any overly structured or planned schooling. However, she is a sponge and I want to take advantage of that! Gemma, along with all one year olds, is constantly learning and trying to figure things out. This is such an important time and I am doing my best to lay down a good foundation for her to build her education upon. So here are the things that I am currently teaching my one year old.

Gemma’s 12 Month Update and Birthday Party Details

I know that I procrastinated on this post.  I just can not believe that our daughter is 12 months old (almost 13 months).  Yet, here we are!  Parents to a one year old with another on the way.  Life is crazy sometimes, right?  I have all the details for you on how Gemma is handling 12 months, how we as parents are handling a 12 month old, and all her first birthday party details.

Nesting and Organizing in the Third Trimester

Hello Third Trimester!  The countdown to baby Evander is getting real.  We have exactly 53 days until we hit our “baby window”.  Gemma was born at 39 weeks and 0 days, so I’m predicting Evander’s arrival to fall somewhere in between 38-41 weeks.  I am in full on nesting mode and I wanted to share a little bit about what I am doing this time around to prepare.

Activities and Easter Baskets for a Baby

Let the Easter preparations begin!  Dallas and I are so excited to begin celebrating Easter with Gemma and (soon) Evander.  We have big plans for the holiday because of how much importance and meaning it holds.  Growing up Dallas and I both superficially celebrated with bunnies, egg hunts, and a church service.  As we started looking into celebrating this holiday with our own children we realized how much deeper the celebration should truly go!

How We Are Coping With Teething

You guys, teething is THE WORST.

I had planned on starting this post by saying I could see the little pearly whites peaking through my daughter’s gums…  I even postponed the post to try and get a picture of those little white teeth… but guess what?  After WEEKS of teething, andour little Bug has NOTHING to show for it.

It is so sad.  The other night Gemma was up for hours just crying out in pain.  Dallas and I had to take turns holding her because having an inconsolable daughter screaming as you try to comfort her is the hardest thing.  We would surrender and pass her back and forth when we just needed a break.  Finally, we got her to fall asleep and besides one or two times of waking up, she did get a few hours of sleep.

I by no means have all this wisdom about how to comfort teething babies.  I am just learning as I am going here.  This is some of the things we’ve tried so far.

1. Baby Tylenol.

It did NOT work for us.  Gemma can not stand Tylenol.  We’ve tried it two different times.  Both times we ended up with a screaming, gagging baby who then makes herself throw up everywhere.  I mean… seriously.  NEVER AGAIN.

2. Amber Necklace.

I am not going to lie… I can not tell if this actually works or not.  Granted, we have only used it a few times but I could never see any kind of change.  At least none that I could solely contribute to the necklace.  Here are some different types of amber beads I’ve found:

baby banana tooth brush3. Banana Toothbrush.

Seriously, our girl loves this thing.  She enjoys chewing on it herself but REALLY loves when Dallas and I brush her gums for her.  I would think if they were really hurting she might not like it so much but it has helped calm her down ALMOST every time.

wooden teething ring4. Wooden Teething Rings.

As adorable as they are, Gemma treats these as any other toy.  I still love them and offer them to her often but she’s not super attached and will only play with them for a few minutes at a time.  Here some other wooden teethers I’ve found:

bandana baby bib with teething toy attached5. Bandana Bib Teethers.

I personally LOVE these.  They are sooo cute and the bandana helps catch her drool.  They are great when we are out and about because she can’t drop or loose the teething toy.  These are the ones we have and I love them… they are all so cute:

Last but not least is really any type of teething toy that sits in the refrigerator first.  We both really like them but, like the wooden teething toys, she is only interested in them for a few minutes.  Here are some great ones:

Ultimately, Dallas and I just have to keep in mind that Gemma is going through a tough time and that she’s probably uncomfortable, if not in actual pain.  We let her cry, try not to get frustrated, and take turns trying to soothe her.  Hopefully we will see some teeth soon, and she will have something to show for all the pain!

Let me know of your own teething tips and tricks in the comments!!

Gemma Raine: 5 Months Old Update

I truly can not believe that this little But is already five months old! She is really so much fun right now. Even though she’s been in some pain because of a diaper rash and teething, her little personality is starting to shine.

Gemma Raine is growing, growing, growing.  She is nearing 15 pounds and has officially moved into 3-6 month clothes.  We are putting her in size two diapers and recently conquered her first diaper rash.  It took using a hair dryer on her little bottom every time we changed her at home to help dry it out and relieve her.

Sweet Baby Girl now sleeps (mostly) through the night.  She will wake up around midnight and cry for a little bit but doesn’t want to eat.  She just wants to be snuggled and given her pacifier.  Then she usually goes right back to sleep.  She prefers to be curled up on her stomach and pressed against he bars of her crib.

I have a feeling this next month and a half will be filled with new milestones for our adventurous Gem.  She is so close to crawling.  Already, she is rolling both ways and can turn herself in a circle.

{Related: Four Month Update}

She has four little teeth right below the gums but they have yet to start breaking through.  She can also sit unassisted for 1.5 seconds but is getting better everyday!

Gemma loves to be held by her Mama and entertained by her Dada.  She cries out mama when she’s upset but we are unsure if she actually connects the meaning.  Whenever we try to get her to say Dada she stares intently almost as if she wants to but usually stays silent.

I am so excited to start feeding her solids but since we are going to try baby-led weaning we are waiting until at least 6 months old and for when she can sit up unassisted.  However, we will be making a trip out to Ikea in a week or two to pick up her highchair!

Five months old is such a fun age and we are soaking in every minute of our constantly growing and changing Baby Girl.
